What are adaptogens?

The term adaptogen comes from the world of herbal medicine. It refers to an herb that help restore your adrenal glands (which secrete your stress and sex hormones).

Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys, and help ‘power your body.’ They power your metabolism, control your blood pressure, control adrenaline levels in your body, and affect your entire bodily system.

When you live an active lifestyle, consume ample amounts of caffeine, and are constantly bombarded with stimulus, your adrenal glands will become depleted and you will experience symptoms of adrenal fatigue.

Common symptoms of adrenal fatigue include lethargy, lower back pain, anxiety, unhealthy weight retention (primarily around the lower stomach area), hormone imbalance, thyroid imbalance, and a compromised immune system.

Most of us suffer from adrenal fatigue and are completely unaware! The best way to combat adrenal fatigue is to incorporate adaptogens in to your diet.

Why are adaptogens good for you?

As stated above, adaptogens work to replenish your adrenal glands.

According to Be Well Health, adaptogens “enable [your] body’s cells to access more energy; [they] help cells eliminate toxic byproducts of the metabolic process and help the body to utilize oxygen more efficiently.”

Adaptogens are not stimulants, meaning they won’t make you feel jittery or ‘buzzed.’ Adaptogens have a calming effect on the body, and will normalize your body’s metabolic functions.

This means they are safe to take at any time of the day (or night).

What foods are considered to be adaptogens?

The most common adaptogens include rhodiola rosea, ashwaganda, ginseng, holy basil, astragalus root, maca, and cordyceps mushrooms.

How often should you take them?

Everyday! There’s no reason to not take adaptogens. They support your overall health, boost your immune system, decrease anxiety along with mental and physical stress, and help boost your physical stamina.
